I'm not sure what my favorite part of Summer Solstice was this year: Liza's three-peat at winning bunches of stuff, watching the runners' faces when they got the wet towel at the end, or the cloud-cover that finally set in and cooled things off. Sorry for the long delay in posting these photos, but I can't keep up with wnrs, on the course or online. So many races, so many changes. Winter's gone and so are several WNRs. Most recently, Tyler, who we hope will rejoin us one day. Here's a brief glimpse of the current state of wnr: construction, renegade wnrs running down cliffs and across the tracks, babies, mia wnrs due to work, mia wnrs due to volcano ash clouds, injuries, wnrs doing tris, and wnrs planning trail runs. Best wishes to those with upcoming races (Dogwood, Cade's Cove, Flying Pig. . . ). Looking forward to a change of scenery for next week's wnr in West Knox. I'm also excited about the Sunday morning run group and hope to join them again soon. Lastly, congrats to our local group who ran the Boston Marathon. You guys are an inspiration.

WNR-2009 Holiday Extravaganza

In between the many marathons and other races WNRs have been planning/running, there have been many social opportunities this holiday season--the KTC Christmas party, the Dirty Santa party, post-wnr celebrations, and random spontaneous gatherings. Next up, the New Year's Day race, Dirty Dozen Doozy, and of course, the WNR when we open the time capsule, well-the tuperware container, and review our New Year's resolutions from last year. Lastly, a special end-of-the-year thanks to: Kristy Altman for her leadership this year, all of the race directors and volunteers for the races this past year, and to Eric, who has graciously allowed me to post the WNR happenings on his blog for yet another year. Cheers to the WNRs and to 2009.

Halloween 2009

WNRs forged a colorful path Wednesday night, running through downtown and Market Square at the annual costume run. We made several stops along the way. No PRs here, although Michele should have won an award for Best Sport, since she ran the route in white go-go boots. To all the WNRs who are cranking it up and PRing enough for the rest of us (for instance, Tracy Rafferty), great job. Keep it up--maybe I'll gain some dedication through osmosis. Or maybe I'll just keep running behind you guys and taking photos. Cheers!

Indianapolis Marathon, Oct. 17

WNRs Julie Adams, Chris Rey, and I headed to Indianapolis last weekend for the Marathon/Half. Julie ran the full and Chris and I ran the half. The course was beautiful and the race was really well organized. Julie really kicked it in at the end, just in time to PR. Had a great time and would highly recommend this race.

Big South Fork, Sept. 26

WNRs Liza, Tracy R., Tracy L., Michele, Martin, Chris, Julie, Mary Anne, Bobby, Bruce, (and probably some more I am forgetting) were a true inspiration to me this weekend when they ran the Big South Fork trail race in torrential rain. Camping in the rain was challenging enough, let alone running 18 miles of trail in a downpour. My (rain) hat's off to you guys. It was great to meet friends of the Quick Chicks I had not yet met as well as Shane and Leslie, whom I had heard so much about.

Some WNRs got together at Fontana this weekend for a little biking, hiking, camping, and relaxing. We had amazing weather and a reason to celebrate--Dean's birthday. Meanwhile, many WNRs are training for marathons (plus!) and a few of us are planning half marathons. It's nice to finally get some cooler weather for our runs. We miss all of the WNRs who have moved on recently. Wednesday nights are not the same without you. Keep us posted.

Seems like this summer has been as busy with personal life changes as it has been with running. This summer the WNRs have: had babies born and have babies on the way, have moved on to greener pastures and run through green pastures (what's with all of you trailer runners, anyway?), had weddings and started planning weddings. There's been birthdays, and graduations (yay, guys!), overseas trips, and of course the end of Todd's residency. And some people are doing a little running in between. Go WNRs! Dragon Boat races, June 27

Some WNRs spent Saturday in the sweltering heat at the Dragon Boat races. With just a couple of practices in, they placed 13 out of 50 teams, which is not too shabby. I tried to get a group photo, but as usual, the WNRs don't stand still for very long and my photo isn't complete. It was a long, hot day and many WNRs left for greener pastures (or work, or a bike trail, etc.) Cheers to the Dragon Boat WNRs for trying something new, the teamwork involved and making us proud. As a running newbie, I learn something new at every race. At this year's Summer Solstice, as a volunteer, I learned that people on country roads don't take kindly to being asked to stop, slow, or take caution on account of a bunch of runners. I have a new appreciation for what the police officers and volunteers must endure when holding back traffic in all of the downtown races. I also was reminded that we have some tough runners in our midst. The hills at Summer Solstice seemed daunting, even from the back of a pick-up truck, riding to my location. The heat was incredible and there was no breeze whatsoever. There were many WNRs at the race and many placed. Fast 40 Dash, June 11

The Fast 40 Dash was quite possibly the funnest race I have ever attended. Kudos to Kristy Altman and all of the volunteers (which included tons of WNRs) for making what must have been a logistical nightmare into a festive, fun, race. I wasn't able to snap photos of everyone because some of you guys never stopped moving. Highlights for me were: the ease of the shuttle buses, the music, the big screen t.v., seeing all of the WNRs, and of course actually running on the interstate. After the WNR on May 20, we celebrated Michele Owen's birthday with Magpie cupcakes at the Runner's Market and then moved on to Cindy Spangler's house. Cindy hosted a good luck gathering for the Quick Chicks, who have ambitious plans for running marathons and ultra marathons this summer. I was tired from just listening to the plans. We took the opportunity to take a group WNR photo--thanks to Chris Rey, who always insists on staying behind the scenes. Thanks, Cindy, for hosting. Derby Marathon/mini, April 25, 2009

Several WNRs went to Louisville, Ky for the Derby Festival Marathon/Mini this weekend. Pete, Michele O., Sandra, and Todd ran the full marathon, and Rebekah (fresh off her Boston race!), Martin, Julie A., and I ran the half. It was Sandra's first full marathon, and she did great, despite the crazy hot weather on Saturday. The day before the race, we picked up our race packets and got to meet Dane Rauschenberg. Later that night, Julie swiped some chicken from the Colonel before we turned in early to get some sleep. The next day, the temp was 71 at 5:00 a.m., which didn't bode well. I, for one, was glad when it was over, but glad I did it.

Harriman Half, April 18

Several WNRs ran in the Harriman half marathon yesterday, April 18. It was my first half and I was nervous, but it turned out to be a perfect first half. The weather was perfect and the course included crowd support of two children, several out-spoken roosters, and a few angry dogs. Several WNRs pr'd which was great and Bobby won the most extravagant trophy ever.

Many WNRs helped out at the Expo. Here are some photos from the Goody Bag and T-Shirt tables. I attempted to take photos on race day but realized that taking photos of people running is no easy task. By the time I got over my excitement of seeing my friends and turning on my camera, they had already run by (so fast!). So much for that. I had a great time with Tracy Rafferty, who was manning the course at Third Creek. Too bad I missed so many photo ops. Hopefully other WNRs had the presence of mind to actually snap some photos. Despite the gloomy forecast, a few of us showed up at Ijams Nature Park to run the XTERRA trail race today. And as it most often happens, it didn't rain the entire race. A little shower before and a little mist to cool things off afterward. What a beautiful day when you think about yesterday!

Michelle O was second F overall and Liza won Masters. The rest of us (Martin, myself) received age group awards I believe. Our trail buddy Shane was there as well. Good times!

Of course, the best part was sharing a parking space with Liza!

A few of us are meeting at IC King to run 10-12 miles on the trails starting @ 1:30pm Sunday (2/1). Come join us if you like. There will possibly be a group running a shorter distance. BYO food/drink for the run and postrun.

There are two entrances to ICK. The southernmost has a gate and the northernmost is just a few hundred feet north. The northernmost is where we'll meet. This is on US hwy. 129 (Alcoa Hwy).

So, the WNRs met tonight after the run, where Pete hosted the Dirty Santa Party. I'm relatively new to this group, so I wasn't sure what to expect for my first Dirty Santa Party. There were many highlights from the evening I wanted to share with those of you who couldn't attend.

I was surprised that Chris R. (below) let me take his photo, which will finally document the fact that he actually attends WNR socials. I was also surprised that Chris was willing to take one for the team, when he stole flowery stationary from Greg (what a dad!).

The stolen stationary brought about a bizzare chain of events that resulted in a Dance Off between gorilla-garbed Greg and Will. No winner was declared. You know how runners are . . . everyone is too nice, and besides, they just cared about how fast the dances would have been interpreted by Garmin. Greg is in the red, Will is in the blue for those of you wondering.

As a newbie and fairly trusting person, I had many questions from tonight that were left unanswered. For instance:

What's dirty about Santa?

Has Pete really had that the blooming Christmas cactus in his condo for over a year? or did he just pick it up from Lowes today?

Is it true that there will be a naked run in honor of the winter solstice?

Was the Chicken Chucker, brought by Julie, with the Quick Chick names written on the chickens some kind of holiday passive-aggressive statement?

And that thing I got as my gift, with the mermaid and "Daytona Beach" (above) written on it--is it really an honor to receive it?

New York Marathon, Nov. 2

Michele O., Mae, and I went to New York last weekend where Michele ran in the New York Marathon. Mae, a N.Y. native, made the trip happen. She was our tour guide/den mother. The trip was a whirlwind. Although Mae and I were never able to find Michele along the route, we did see Santa, Batman and Robin, and Uncle Sam. Michele finished in 4 hours, 7 minutes, which was a great time. Mae and I ran about 27 miles that day in our attempt to find Michele. It was the first marathon I've ever watched, and it was amazing.

Haunted Corn Maze

While many WNRs are training for various marathons, some of us, well, lesser-achieving WNRs have been goofing off. Several of us went to a haunted corn maze (Maple Lane Farms) in Greenback on Sunday, Oct. 26 and met some new friends. We are hoping they show up for some Wednesday night runs although most seem not quite up to the WNR standards--they're a little unsavory. I thought that even I could probably outrun a guy holding a chainsaw, so I'm hoping he shows up some Wednesday with the chainsaw. By the end of the evening, we were all good friends.
Next year, however, we might shave an hour or so off our maze time by consulting the maze map on the way in!

Tsali, N.C. Camping Trip Oct. 18

Several WNRs went to Tsali, N.C. this weekend to take advantage of the mountain bike trails. I tagged along and discovered that a) camping can be fun, b) "the Dragon" as a passenger is not so fun, and c) some of the WNRs are pretty darn tough. Michele O. and Joe (Sandra's friend) wrecked on the trails and Ulla's fella, Andrew, took a nasty spill off the back of his lawn chair.

The WNRs were plentiful @ the Wears Valley 15K this morning. It might be easier to list who was not there. Since a few of us ran before and after the race, I missed many of the volunteers, but saw CSpan and Hutch at a water stop and Cindi H registered runners. Amanda held down the finish line almost single handedly.

The Summer Solstice 8k proved to be a much more "enjoyable" experience for folks this year with temperatures about 10 degrees below the average. I didn't see anyone hit the deck from heat exhaustion this year and almost everyone that started the race finished.
Thw Wednesday Night Runners were well represented and nailed down some impressive times. Taylor Poling (31:51) took 2nd overall female honors, Paul Thames (29:54) walked away with 2nd overall male and Sally Evenden (40:39) won first place female grandmasters. Other WNRs that I spotted include Chris Hayes (38:07), Karen Lacey ( 43:24), Liza Graves (43:50 ), Sandra Hogan (44:31), Bruce Fox( 45:09), Greg Weddle (46:21), Tracy Rafferty (47:42), Betty Scholl (49:05), Doris Gove (55:14 ), and Diane Brown (55:24 ).

The volunteer department was also stacked with WNRs. I saw Cindy, Eli, Anna, myself, Daniel, Michelle, Juila among others.
Great Job folks! Way to represent the Wednesday Night Runners! I hope everyone enjoyed the food and music and indulged responsibly (Keg stands? What keg stands?)

It's a little late but wanted to give big props to all of the WNRs that took part in Expo. No names really jumped out in the 5k results and it doesn't look like there were many that took part in the 10k but I wanted to make sure that those that I found were recognized for their efforts!

Well, it would have been free but we all opted for contributing a buck or two to Beardsley Farms and got to cut to the front of the (very long) line! Yes, we received many nasty looks as we passed the many, many people waiting in line.

Free Scoop Reminder

Just a reminder that some of us will be meeting in front of Ben and Jerry's (in Western Plaza) at 5:30 this coming Tuesday, April 29 for a five mile run through Sequoyah Hills before taking full advantage of Ben and Jerry's annual Free Scoop Day.
I have mapped out a route that is just shy of 5 miles and I'm not gonna lie to ya; it's hilly. It is Sequoyah Hills though... Ever tried to put together 5 flat miles there?
The route can be previewed here . I put Noelton at the beginning so that we can run down it for once!
Anyway, it was either that or the greenway. Of course, you're allowed to run wherever you'd like but I will have this route chalked out and you will be guaranteed to earn the calories that you will take in at the end.
Hopefully we will see some of the folks from the track workout there as well.

The KTC Social Committee is sponsoring an Earth Day group run on Tuesday, April 22, beginning at the entrance plaza of the UT Trial Gardens. We'll run 3-4 miles on the greenway and then enjoy a nice cool down stroll through the gardens led by Katie McCarver. (Maybe we can catch up with Keith's track group for pizza following)!

Don't forget folks, Thursday, April 10 is movie night! For any and all that are interested, we will be going to see the 7:40 screening of Run Fatboy, Run at Downtown West Cinemas. To kill the time between 5:00 and 7:40, I will be at Pelancho's (across the parking lot from the theater) enjoying a tasty Pelancho Burrito and a frosty cold adult beverage on the deck, weather permitting. Come on down for dinnner and a movie!

Free Scoop 5 Miler!

Did you know that every year Ben and Jerry's has one day when they give away free scoops of ice cream all day? Well they do! This year it will be on April 29 and we plan on making the most of it.

If anyone is looking for a Tuesday evening workout (and reward!) that is a little more low key than a track workout, come meet Karen , Eric and Jaimes at Ben and Jerry's in Western Plaza for their 1st annual Free Scoop 5 miler! We will leave Ben and Jerry's at 5:45, run a yet to be announced course and finish with a tasty snack at everyone's favorite ice cream shop!

Don't worry... the normal Wednesday Night run is the next day so we can work off those extra calories!

Greenways 5k

Thanks to all who came out to support the Greenways 5k yesterday. The WNRs were well represented indeed.
Running we had Eric B (19:36), Karen L (22:58), Cindi H (27:33) and Diane Brown (31:07)
I can't remember who I actually saw there but I do remember that the water stop was manned (and wo-manned) almost completely by WNRs!
Thanks to Cindy S for playing group photographer and assisting in pre and post race activities.

I can't sign off without mentioning that Julia and Montana, her golden retriever, took 2nd place overall in the 2 mile dog jog! Nice going Montana!

A quick congrats to all of the WNRs that ran in the Knoxville 1/2 and full Marathons this past weekend.
I'm not even going to try to find all of the names of those that ran so let's just say that the Wednesday Night Runners rule!
It was also great to see so many of us out there volunteering on race day! Sure, the teams might have had quite a few folks volunteering but I honestly think that the WNRs had more people on the marathon committee and volunteer staff than any other social group. It makes me proud to run with all of you.

It is true. Tlee, Liza, Laurie G and I went down to Jacksonville for the inaugural "Run with Donna"...26.2 for Breast Cancer. Here's a glimpse of all the fun! 3 WNRs, 2.5 marathons, 2 wearing the marathon ribbon. Figure it out! As hot as it was, ML beer was the most we could stomach post run. It was a blast, and our hero Liza, led us all the way.

10 Mile Route

If you ever need a good 10 miler with some good climbs, check out the link below. I started at the Bi Lo parking lot but one could start at Runners Market just as easily. Lots of rollers and a nice trip up Noelton just before the 9 mile mark!

A quick synopsis:
* Greenway all the way to Neyland
* Right up Neyland to Kingstom Pike
* Down KP to Cherokee
* Left onto Cherokee Blvd
* Cherokee (becomes Blows Ferry at the end) all the way to Alta Vista
* Alta Vista to Noelton (here's the fun part!)
* Up Noelton to KP
* Puke, catch your breath and turn left onto KP
* Follow KP down to Carr St (the corner that the OLD Toddy's sits on).
* Take a right.
* Take your first right onto Chambliss and run that back to Bi Lo!

Funtimes at the dirty santa gift exchange and party at Cindy's last Wednesday. Thanks so much Cindy for being (as always!) such a great host!

Congrats to all the WNRs who raced this weekend:

Recent WNR attendee, Andy Baksa won the Kiawah Half Marthon in a speedy time of 1:08:56! Obviously he benefited from the good karma that comes along with hangin around WRNs :)

I noticed in the results several WRNs tackled the Oak Ridge half marathon & took home age group awards too! Way to go TR, Tlee, Laurie, Doris...and others.... I saw the results somewhere yesterday, but now I can't find them again! Those are the names I remember seeing off the top of my head though :)

Also props to Pete, saw he got out there in the rain for the Jingle bell 5k downtown. Other WRNs were probably there too, but I got tired of scrolling through results...so congrats as well to everyone I missed who got out and raced last weekend!

Hey KTC peeps! I'm glad to hear you all have had some great racing going on these days. I just wanted to pop in to say hi and put a bug in your ear about a road trip for the Cooper River Bridge Run. It's the weekend after the Knoxville Marathon (5 Apr 08), so no excuse this year to not head to Charleston for a great 10k race. I will be flying in from LA so I hope to see you then!

Halloween Plans!!

Hey WNRs! Don't forget that this Wed is Halloween! So come to the group run in costume...or something festive & halloweenish. Instead of the usual run, some of us will be in costume & doing an hour of house to house jogging & trick-or-treating, FUN TIMES!! We'll probably only cover a couple miles (& slowly....so you may want to get your 'real' miles in earlier) touring some of the closest streets in Sequoyah Hills as well as that nice 'Sequoyah Gardens' gated neighbor (I think that's what it's called) that backs up to Western Plaza. Bring a bag that you can collect and carry your loot in! Afterwards, Dani H. has been so kinda to offer to stay and close the store a little later than usual so we can all hang out and have a little Halloween party at the store for a bit. Feel free to bring any snacks, treats, or beverages! I'm also gonna work on getting a bobbing for apples activity together.... if anybody has a big container that would work for this and would like to volunteer to bring it & a bag-o-apples...that would be great! Let me know. If you still want to get a regular run in, I'm sure there will still be a group doing that as well, & I'm sure the trick-or-treater gang will still be willing to share our candy with all! :) Yea for Halloween! Ironman Florida coming soon!

Hey K-Town peeps! I hope you are all doing well. I wanted to let you all know that on Nov. 3rd I'll be in Panama City Beach, FL competing in Ironman Florida. If you'd like to check in on my progress during the day, you can do that at ironman.com. The race starts at 7 am EDT and my race number is 721. My training has been crap since I've been travelling a lot for my new job, but I think I can manage to finish again. :)

Graves buries field in Survivor's race

Liza Graves dug out another victory in the survivor's category of the Knoxville Race for the Cure yesterday! Our very own WNR rock star, flanked by Quick Chicks TLee (PR!) and Cindy Spangler who ran the race and YT who walked, celebrated with fellow WNRs Greg W and Chris H and lots of other friends on the Worlds Fair lawn in usual fashion.

Rumor was that Bruce W was somewhere on site figuring out the correct race course moments before the race began. Thanks, Bruce!

It was a glorious day. Hats off to all breast cancer survivors, victims and their families as we come closer and closer to finding a cure.

WNR Women Take Top Spots @ XKnox 15k!

I was happy to see & pull tags from several WNRs as they crossed the finish line at the Cross-Knox 15k on Saturday, and more WNRs were volunteering at several locations. Great showing by all who participated & helped on one of the chilliest mornings we've seen this fall!

Special congrats to WNR women Amanda Townsend & Anna Shamey for taking the 1st & 2nd overall women's spots! It was the best finish I saw all day... a neck & neck sprint to the finish! Amanda had a little more kick & got the top spot, but it was a great effort by both ladies. Congrats on your victories!!!
